@theASAPbravo: When did you start vaping? And how did you get into vaping?
@shattercoils: I was a pack a day smoker for about 4 years, until early 2014. I discovered the Blu ecig first, and was incredibly underwhelmed. It helped me cut a cig or two, but certainly not a viable substitute. Having had a glimpse of the possibilities however, I did some research and found that several local smoke shops carried ego pen style vapes. I immediately purchased a kit for my wife and I each.
Those kits, regardless of the flaws, were what we needed to finally cut all ties with our nasty habit. Slowly but surely as we began to enjoy vaping more and more I kept up on the newest devices, and frequently upgraded through the KangerTech protanks and subtanks. As technology moved forward, I discovered mechanical mods around November 2014. I spent a few hours discussing the pros and cons at a local shop, and ended up walking out with a fully built mechanical mod setup. I was on cloud 9.
@theASAPbravo: What ignited the spark in you to start a new business venture (or become a strong enthusiast) in the vape industry? How did the idea for your business come about?
@shattercoils: Until my cotton got old…. I quickly realized this was going to more work than I anticipated. But I was too proud of my monster clouds to give up, so I persevered, watching some tutorials, and made my first build on an RDA. Literally the SECOND I fired those coils up, and watched my hard work glow up evenly, and function just how I’d hoped, I was hooked.
Building has been my favorite aspect of vaping since that day, and I have yet to find a more relaxing and zen inducing hobby. It has brought me countless hours of stress relief and satisfaction. I have learned so much along the way, from incredible members of the community with no motives other than the success of the vaping world, and success of every person in it.
Once I realized the vape community was centered around Instagram, I created an account and started following every vape related page I could find. Watching what others were doing pushed me to keep trying new things, and every time I successfully completed a build I got the same sense of satisfaction as I had that first day. For 2 years I built my page up and honed my skills, but eventually I began to feel that I was being left in the dust as so many builders around me were being sponsored.
And added into build teams. After getting to know a few like minded builders, I put forward the idea that we create our own build team, rather than sit around passively waiting. The idea was a hit, and my friends and I went to work selecting and inviting our top prospects that we felt could benefit from shared knowledge, and work as a team for a common goal. Together with @toxic_drummer @coilquandary and @matadorvapes @the_parallel_resistance team was born.
Teamwork immediately proved to be incredibly mutually beneficial, as each of us were taking huge steps and improving drastically, far faster than before. It didn’t take long before we were noticed, and started picking up sponsors. We have working with @bmi.official, @the_swvl, @nativewickscotton, @limitlessmodco and more.
@theASAPbravo: What three pieces of advice would you give to anyone who wants to become entrepreneurs/influencers?
@shattercoils: For someone looking to start a venture like this, choose your associates wisely. One bad apple can spoil the bunch, so keep a sharp eye for anyone who isn’t in it for the team. And get rid of them. Be heartless when it comes to the family you’ve built. Secondly, get perspective often. Take time to look at how far you’ve come. It will push you to where you want to be. And lastly, control your emotions. Don’t lash out, or go on rants. Don’t bring negative attention to yourself. One block from a prominent page can screw you over later on.
@theASAPbravo: If you had the chance to start your career in the vape industry over again, what would you do differently?
@shattercoils: If I could start my building career over, the only thing I would change is to work harder and start sooner. If you enjoy it, don’t slack. Make it even more enjoyable by working hard and pushing yourself.
@theASAPbravo: Describe/outline your typical day?
@shattercoils: It’s not always easy to find time to do what I love, I’m a father, husband and provider first. I work full time as a plastic extrusion operator (plastic tubing manufacture) and when I’m home, my family takes a majority of my free time. But that’s what I love about building, it takes my mind off of the stress of the day, and gives me a much needed break, while encouraging me and making me feel better about myself at the same time.
@theASAPbravo: What motivates you?
@shattercoils: One aspect of building I enjoy most is the variety. I very rarely build the same coil twice, and when I do I change SOMETHING. Endless variety and endless directions to innovate and be creative. If you fail, try again, but tweak the specs a bit. Fail again? Keep changing things up. You’ll find a method that works, and if you don’t, you’ll have a whole lot of practice under your belt. Wasting wire is never a bad thing. It was time well spent teaching yourself a lesson.
@theASAPbravo: Who has been your greatest inspiration?
@shattercoils: @coilquandary is the one individual who has kept me motivated and continues to push me every day. He constantly works to improve his quality and further his skill, as well as being an incredible resource for those around him. He was my first selection when nominating team members, and he immediately was elected captain. Though I am the founder, he has been the foundation.
@theASAPbravo: What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur/influencer?
@shattercoils: As the years have passed since I started this venture, I have gone from crippling self doubt to incredible pride in what I created. We have evolved from a group of confused and left behind builders, to a movement of like-minded, talented individuals with a passion and unsurpassed team spirit. Countless times various members have been contacted with offers of other build teams or sponsorships, but my people remain true. It’s clear to each and every one of us that this train is going places.
@theASAPbravo: To what do you most attribute your success? What would say are the five key elements for starting and running a successful business/influencer account?
@shattercoils: My success has been based around the community 100%. Never for a second have I had to hesitate with a question or to ask for some tips, it doesn’t matter who it is. Nearly everyone in the vaping community will respond with a friendly helpful attitude and devote as much time as necessary to ensuring that you have all the information you need. Without that resource, none of us would be where we are today.
@theASAPbravo: What has been your most satisfying moment in the industry?
@shattercoils: Our first sponsorship as a team was the most encouraging and satisfying moment since this all began. Knowing that our efforts were noticed, and that our work had reached a level that was desirable. We all achieved the self affirmation we were searching for.
@theASAPbravo: How do you go about marketing your business/page? What has been your most successful form of marketing?
@shattercoils: As a backstage leader, I don’t involve myself in the marketing angle, as I have a family and very little spare time outside of my actual job. My admin has a steady stream of customers, and are slowly chipping away at our long term goal. If everything continues to go as planned, we should have a team coil website by 2018.
@theASAPbravo: In one word, characterize your life as an entrepreneur.
@shattercoils: My life as an entrepreneur…. confidence. Pushing myself has given me more confidence and self esteem than anything I’ve ever done.
@theASAPbravo: What are your hobbies? What do you do in your non-hustle time? What makes you happy?
@shattercoils: My family always comes first in my down time, my 2yo son requires a lot of energy! And a happy wife means a happy life… My hobby is building, and no other hobby could suffice but nothing makes me happier than my Oregon adventures with my family. We love to take long drives To remote places and enjoy untouched nature.
@theASAPbravo: What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?
@shattercoils: Time. Time is a sacrifice in itself, and the countless hours I’ve poured into this hobby leave me questioning what I could have done with that time. But every time I feel an inkling of doubt, I take notice of not only how far I’ve come, but how much those who I have brought close have improved as well.
@theASAPbravo: Excluding yours, what company or influencer do you admire the most?
@theASAPbravo: What is your favorite (I know that’s a tough one so if you can’t decide) What is your current setup?
